The artists

Behind our labels

Hans Kompatscher

Born on January 1, 1906 at the Schnurrhof in Völser Aicha, South Tyrol, is an exceptional talent whose works adorn our labels. Influenced by difficult circumstances in his childhood, he had to take on responsibility early on and earn his own living. Initially working as a shepherd in the surrounding mountains, he later became a tailor and ran his own tailoring business in Bindergasse in Bolzano.

But his true passion was art. From an early age he was interested in music, singing, drawing and sculpture. From 1960, he devoted himself to painting and began producing oil paintings, which were regularly presented in exhibitions from 1970 onwards. His works, which may appear naive at first glance, are characterized by a profound, often ironic view of everyday life. With keen powers of observation and an unmistakable visual language, Hans Kompatscher expresses stories and emotions that still fascinate and inspire today.

Berty Skuber

Berty Skuber, born Alberta Kompatscher, is the daughter of the South Tyrolean artist Hans Kompatscher and an outstanding artist of her generation. She spent the first 18 years of her life in Bolzano before spending extended periods in cultural metropolises such as Venice, Milan, Rome, New York and the South of France. Together with her husband Henry A. Martin, an art critic and professor at Bocconi University in Milan, she devoted herself to art and culture.

Since the early 1970s, her works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and America. Her videos have been shown internationally in galleries and at festivals. Works by Berty Skuber are represented in renowned private and public collections and museums around the world. Accompanying catalogs and artist books underline the depth and versatility of her art.

Today, the artist lives in seclusion at the Prackfol vineyard in Völser Aicha, where she continues to enjoy her creativity and connection to art in a quiet lifestyle. Her works, characterized by a unique view of the world, enrich our labels and give them an unmistakable artistic touch.
